Article types

The Annals considers the submission of scholarly articles that employ a range of research methodologies such as qualitative, quantitative, or critical (i.e., qualitative with a postmodern or power focus). Examples of research include historical, descriptive, correlational, and experimental investigations. Also encouraged are research syntheses or integrative works, including metadata or metanarrative analyses. Manuscripts that focus on building or testing theories or models, supported by empirical studies, are also welcomed. All of the above should proffer strong recommendations for education, clinical, or social settings and include new directions for further theorizing, research, and/or practice for individuals who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing.

In essence, topics may include social-emotional development, reading, writing, sign language interpreting, language development, inquiry-based science instruction, use of captions, cochlear implants, dual diagnosis (deafness and autism), deaf-blindness, deaf with disabilities, the role of counselors, and memory research and deafness — among others.

Submission requirements

Manuscript Format
AAD follows APA Style and all manuscripts must adhere to the style of the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. There is no required word limit; however, it is recommended that manuscripts be between 5000 to 10,000 words (including references, tables, figures, and appendices).

All submissions must be in English and be submitted as a Word document (no PDFs). The font size should be 12, and we recommend Times New Roman or Times. Except for the title page, the text should be double-spaced. The title page will need to be separated from the rest of the manuscript and uploaded as a separate document. Please call out tables and figures in the manuscript where they should be placed (e.g., insert table 1 near here) and include these items at the end of the text after the reference list (or appendix, if included) in ONE document. Upon acceptance, we will ask for any figures to be sent in their original formats as separate files.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reprint tables, figures, illustrations, and large extracts. Copies of the permission letters must accompany the manuscript.

Abstracts should be limited to 250 words. We also ask that you provide keywords (at the end of the abstract, and please limit them to six words). Please also identify the main author for correspondence.

Authors are requested to render their manuscripts as anonymously as possible (i.e., no identifying information such as their published articles, names of institutions, etc.). The Annals’ Editor makes every effort to ensure that manuscripts are anonymized prior to sending them to the selected reviewers.

For questions or feedback regarding the submissions process, please contact the Editor, Peter Paul, at paul.3@osu.edu.

Special Issues/Sections
Contributors may propose a special issue or section by providing a brief introduction to the concept (explicating purpose or scope) and, if possible, a list of authors and affiliations with specific titles for all articles to be included. It is helpful if the contributors provide a brief description of each article. If accepted, the special issue/section editors solicit the manuscripts and send them to the Annals’ Editor. The manuscripts undergo the same editorial and review process as do regular issues.

Book Reviews
The Annals publishes book reviews under the direction of the Book Review Editor. The Book Review Editor may compose a review, invite others to compose a review, or accept unsolicited requests to conduct reviews. The style and length of manuscripts should adhere to the same conditions for other manuscripts. Please contact the Book Review Editor directly with your suggestions and submissions.

Editorial and Peer Review Process

Submitted unsolicited manuscripts are subjected to an internal review by the Editor. This process requires one to 2 weeks. Manuscripts can be rejected at this stage by the Editor, or authors may be asked to revise and resubmit their work.

After a successful initial review, the manuscript is then reviewed by one or two experts. Typically, the review process at this stage is 8 weeks in length. Reviews of manuscripts along with the Editor’s decision letter are sent to the authors and to the reviewers who participated in the evaluation of the manuscript.

The review process is fully anonymous. The authors’ identities are revealed to the reviewers (separately) upon acceptance of the manuscript; however, the authors do not ever know the identities of the reviewers.

Publication details

All manuscripts are professionally copyedited prior to publication. One set of proofs will be sent to the lead author. Authors are responsible for proofreading and returning the proofs by the given deadline.

Authors who wish to provide a written translation of their abstract into another language are encouraged to do so. We ask that the author provide their own translation and not use AI technologies. We are not able to check the translation and are not responsible for its accuracy.

We also invite authors of papers accepted for publication to submit signed language video abstracts to accompany their written articles. Click here for more information.

If you wish to submit a translated or signed abstract, please do so at the copyediting stage to ensure sufficient processing time.

The American Annals of the Deaf is available in print and electronic format to individual and institutional subscribers.
